From May 12 to 16, 2019, Québec City has been the host to the 50th International Research Group on Wood Protection conference. Since its inauguration in 1969, the IRG-WP has been acting as a global organization for the dissemination of scientific information on wood protection technologies.
Celebrating the 50th anniversary
For this special edition, more than 200 participants from 30 countries attended this venue. The Organizing Committee Chair, led by FPInnovations’ Rod Stirling with the support of Gabrielle Boivin and Adnan Uzunovic, worked hard having everything well aligned for the whole week of conference, which was a success. In addition to the state-of-the art presentations, the conference also included a poster session, and reception held in the Château Frontenac’s ballroom.
The event was the occasion to honor Paul Morris, former research leader of FPInnovations’ Wood Protection Group now retired, who was given an Honorary Life Long Membership for his contributions to wood protection and to IRG.
Outstanding participation by FPInnovations
The event included special sessions on knowledge transfer in wood protection, protecting sustainable wood infrastructure, and mass timber – protecting its potential. Three FPInnovations employees offered presentations:
- Identifying the fungal community on western redcedar (Thuja plicata) wood in field tests above and in ground contact exposure: preliminary results
- Alternative fumigants to Methyl Bromide for wood products: Review of the development and preliminary tests of Ethane Dinitrile (EDN) in Canada
- Performance of field cut preservatives above-ground and in ground contact exposures
Rod Stirling appointed as Vice-President
The week was concluded by the appointment of Rod Stirling as the new Vice President of the IRG-WP, and Lone Ross Gobakken of NIBIO, Norway, as the new President. As Vice President Rod will chair the Scientific Programme Committee for the next three years. For FPInnovations, this involvement will present opportunities for international collaboration and give FPInnovations greater influence over the direction of global wood protection research.
The next meeting will be in Bled, Slovenia, June 7 to 11, 2020.
