Overview of Enhanced Forest Inventory Research in Newfoundland

The way we inventory our forests is changing. The Canadian Wood Fibre Centre and the Canadian Forest Service are working together with provincial governments, as well as industrial and academic partners, to develop and refine enhanced forest inventory systems. A wide range of forest inventory attributes can be mapped at operational scales using airborne laser scanner (ALS) data. With increasing technological advances in ALS systems, acquisition costs are decreasing making operational application more feasible.
We first explore the effect of one of these advances, increased scan angle, on the error of ALS-based predictions of forest attributes. We then demonstrate an approach for large-area mapping using ALS, satellite, and environmental data; suitable when wall-to-wall ALS coverage is logistically challenging or cost prohibitive.
